If you have erectile dysfunction that is not responsive to medication, you may benefit from a penile implant. At Richmond University Medical Center, our knowledgeable physicians offer innovative erectile dysfunction services in the Staten Island area. Here, our team answers your penile implant questions.
What Is Erectile Dysfunction?
According to the National Institute of Health, approximately 30 million men in the United States have some form of erectile dysfunction (ED). If you are living with ED, know that you are not alone. ED is characterized by an inability to get and keep an erection during sexual intercourse. Physicians often prescribe medications, penile injection therapy, and a vacuum erection device to treat this condition.
However, these treatments may not be for everyone. In these cases, a penile implant (or penile prosthesis) may be an option to help you keep an erection.
What Is a Penile Implant?
A penile implant allows you to achieve an erection using a surgically implanted device. This device helps with severe cases of ED caused by diabetes, heart disease, or prostate cancer. It can also be useful for men with conditions that cause penile deformities, such as Peyronie disease. This condition creates scar tissue in the penis, causing it to bend.
How Does a Penile Implant Work?
There are two types of penile implants. Each one works a little bit differently.
Inflatable Devices
With an inflatable penile device, your urology team surgically implants several connected parts. The urologist will place two small cylinders into your penis during the implantation surgery. These tubes connect to a pouch of saline water in your lower abdomen. Your surgeon then connects this pouch to a pump inside your scrotum.
Before sexual intercourse, you squeeze the pump. The pouch of saline water fills the inflatable cylinders. Once you are done with sexual intercourse, press a button above the pump to deflate the cylinders.
Semi-Rigid Rods
This surgical procedure is made for men who have reduced dexterity in their hands and may find it difficult to use an inflatable prosthesis. Your surgeon implants rods made of metal wires or coils into your penis. These rods are covered in a silicone jacket for flexibility and protection. Unlike an inflatable device, this penile implant stays erect.
Do Penile Implants Affect Intercourse?
Neither of these implants affects your ability to orgasm or ejaculate. However, you and your partner may find it takes a while to get used to your new device. Most people who have a penile implant report that intercourse feels the same or better after the procedure. It does not change the physical sensation on your skin, so your intimacy should provide the same amount of pleasure.
Other Frequently Asked Questions About Penile Implants
At Richmond University Medical Center, we want you to be as informed as possible about your treatment options. Our physicians are available to answer any questions about your penile implant, including the most common.
How Long Does an Implant Last?
Penile implants last around 20 years on average. Once it wears out, your surgeon can replace it with a new one.
Will It Make My Erection Bigger?
No. Your penis will stay the same size after your surgery. In fact, your erection may seem shorter than it was pre-surgery. Your implant is in the shaft of your penis, not the head. This can cause your erection to appear smaller because the head is not engorged. Your physician can prescribe you medication to increase the blood flow to the head if you wish.
Can a Woman Tell if a Man Has a Penile Implant?
In most cases, no. No one should be able to tell that you have a penile implant unless they feel your penis while it is flaccid. However, during intercourse, your partner will not be able to tell the difference.
Can I Achieve a Natural Erection After Surgery?
No. For your surgeon to place the implant, they will need to remove much of the erectile tissue. Therefore, you will not be able to achieve an erection on your own. You should only consider a penile implant if all other treatments have failed, or you are not happy with the side effects of the other options.
Is the Procedure Lengthy?
No, penile implant surgery should take one or two hours to complete. It is an outpatient procedure in our state-of-the-art ambulatory and general surgery center. Barring any complications, you can go home the same day.
