High-Risk Labor and Delivery Services

Not all mothers and infants require the same level of care. The Center for Maternal/Fetal Medicine at Richmond University Medical Center offers specialized services for preterm and high-risk deliveries. Our specialists work tirelessly to ensure the health of both mother and child with the following services:

Preterm Labor

Preterm labor occurs when the cervix opens after week 20 but before week 37 of pregnancy. It may be caused by a variety of factors and can lead to premature birth. Premature babies, sometimes called preemies, often have unique needs requiring special attention. Richmond University Medical Center is equipped to handle both preterm labor and the care of premature newborns.

High-Risk Obstetrical Services

High-risk pregnancies refer to those where the health of either mother or child is of concern. These deliveries require precise care to ensure everybody’s well-being. Richmond University Medical Center is home to an experienced team of high-risk prenatal specialists who ensure that mothers receive expert care at all stages of pregnancy, including delivery.

Neonatal Intensive Care

Some newborns require a higher level of care. The state-of-the-art Wayne Zenna Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) registers a survival rate of 997.2 out of every 1,000 births. A Level III NICU, we are equipped with advanced technology and run by experienced physicians and neonatologists to ensure that premature newborns, newborns with congenital defects, and other high-risk infants receive the care they need.

Planning for Labor and Delivery

When pregnant, it is crucial not to wait until labor begins to create a delivery plan. Labor and delivery are critical times for both mother and child. Without the appropriate medical attention, both their health may be at risk. Planning ahead is one of the most important steps that future parents can make to ensure a safe and successful delivery. It also lets them take control of the event, which comes with several benefits:

  • Reduced anxiety: Labor is often overwhelming, especially for new parents. Having a plan reduces stress, helping parents approach childbirth with greater confidence.
  • Personalized experience: If parents have already chosen their hospital delivery, they can make sure their preferences are known and acted upon by the staff.
  • Informed decisions: Planning allows parents to research their options and select the best facility to ensure the highest level of care.
  • Preparation for unexpected events: Unexpected events may arise during labor. Having a birth plan can help parents navigate these situations for a safer experience.

For all these reasons, Richmond University Medical Center encourages future parents to plan with us. Our knowledgeable OB/GYN doctors work with patients to ensure a smooth delivery and a strong, healthy start to their newborn’s life.
