NICU

Santosh M. Parab. MD, FAAP Chief of Neonatology

Richmond University Medical Center serves one of the highest risk populations in the United States, with a disproportionate share of low birth weight babies born in comparison to the national average. When considering this and the many other challenges it faces, the Wayne Zenna Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at RUMC has achieved remarkable accomplishments. Its neonatal mortality rate of 1 per 1,000 live births during the past five years is significantly lower than the national average of 4.

At the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, we are dedicated to providing exceptional, compassionate care to our tiniest and most vulnerable patients. Our Level III facility is staffed by highly skilled team of neonatologists, specialized nurses, physician assistants, respiratory therapists, and other experts who work around the clock to ensure the best possible outcomes for newborns in need of critical care.

Our NICU has a long-standing history of success and excellence that have helped countless premature and critically ill infants thrive. We take pride in our family-centered approach, ensuring parents are involved in every step of the way in their baby’s journey. We aim to provide the highest quality medical services. Many neonatal graduates come back as youngsters to simply say thank you to the staff for saving their lives.

Currently, there are 25 beds in our NICU, giving the gift of life to more than 500 newborns each year. We are honored to be a trusted source of hope, healing, and expert care for families during challenging times.

RUMC Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is an active member of the prestigious Vermont Oxford Network (VON). Our outcomes in the VON International Database for benchmarking are equal to and most exceed the national averages.
