Welcome to the Department of Radiology
Richmond University Medical Center (RUMC) Diagnostic Radiology Residency is a fully accredited ACGME four-year resident training program.
RUMC, formerly St. Vincent’s Medical Center Staten Island, is a large community hospital that serves as a Level I Trauma Center and a major Stroke Center for Staten Island. The radiology group is composed of Board-Certified, fellowship-trained attending radiologists in all subspecialties. There are two radiology residents per year, for a total of eight current residents. The attendings and residents perform a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic imaging procedures at two locations, which include the main hospital campus and the adjacent primary outpatient imaging center, Regional Radiology. The radiology department at the hospital performs and interprets a full gamut of imaging modalities. We provide state-of-the-art outpatient imaging modalities such as PET/CT fusion, cardiac CT, virtual colonoscopy on a new 64-detector CT, digital mammography and whole body MRI including breast MRI and MRA.
The residency training itself mainly occurs at the Richmond University Medical Center Main Campus. Residents cover the core rotations, which include the ER rotation, gastrointestinal and uroradiological fluoroscopy, pediatrics, cardiovascular and interventional radiology, neuroradiology, and body imaging rotations. The other rotations include nuclear medicine, musculoskeletal/bone radiology, mammography and women’s imaging, ultrasound, thoracic, and Body MRI. There is a night float system during the week and 24-hour call on weekends. “Buddy call” is done by the first year residents until their second year. Attending backup, senior resident backup and nighthawk teleradiology is always provided. Residents are given 4 weeks of vacation per year as well as stipends to numerous conferences, including a fully paid AIRP (formerly AFIP) Conference as well as board review courses. Lectures are given by our own staff and supplemented by outside lecturers whom we hand pick to supplement our radiology education and board review.
The residency is a small but intimate group of people. We get along and enjoy each other’s company both in and out of the hospital; this leads to a warm, congenial working atmosphere. Moreover, the residents and attendings have a great relationship. Having Manhattan and Brooklyn only minutes away also helps. In fact, our residents and attendings commute from all over the metro area to the hospital each morning – current and former residents have resided in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Queens, Long Island and New Jersey.

Overview of Richmond University Medical Center
Richmond University Medical Center (RUMC), is a 470+ bed healthcare facility serving borough residents as a leader in the areas of surgery, gastroenterology, pediatrics and pediatric gastroenterology, endocrinology, urology, oncology, orthopedics, surgery and maternal health. With over 2,000 employees, RUMC is one of the largest employers on Staten Island. Its main campus is located at 355 Bard Avenue, Staten Island, New York 10310. RUMC is easily accessible by public transportation.
RUMC is recognized for its outstanding neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) which has the lowest mortality rate in the metropolitan area and a survival rate of 99.4% (2011) that exceeds national benchmarks (Source: Vermont Oxford Study). RUMC received the prestigious recognition as a “Baby-Friendly” birth facility.
RUMC is a Level 1 Trauma Center and a designated Stroke Center. The hospital was the recipient of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award for 2010, 2011 and 2012. RUMC maintains a Wound Care Center, Pain Management Center and a Sleep Disorder Center on-site at its main campus. RUMC is the only borough facility that offers inpatient psychiatric services for adolescents at its main campus and is currently in the process of expanding its capacity to meet the needs of the community.

Equipment
Equipment currently in use on the teaching campus includes 2 multidetector (64 and 16) helical GE CT scanners, 1 helical Siemens CT scanner, Siemens Short Bore 1.5 Tesla Magnet, Siemens Open MRI System, Siemens 1.5 Tesla, a digital interventional radiology suite, digital mammography, four fluoroscopy rooms, four nuclear SPECT cameras and an emergency radiology suite and 2 state-of-the-art radiation therapy suites. A PET/CT suite is in place. Color duplex ultrasonography, obstetrical sonography, bone densitometry, and stereotactic/sonographic core biopsy and fine needle aspiration are routinely performed. The vascular and interventional radiology service performs approximately 2,000 arterial, venous, dialysis, biliary, renal, and drainage or biopsy procedures each year. A Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) is used at Regional Radiology (Philips iSite) and RUMC (GE Universal Viewer EA 4.0). Powerscribe 360 Voice recognition is used at both sites.
