Cardiac Catherization Labratory at Richmond University Medical Center
Richmond University Medical Center is very proud of its cardiac catheterization laboratory (named after Dr. Samala Swamy) that has been providing service to patients since its opening in 1978. The “cath lab” has been at the forefront of emergency care of the heart attack victim and has trained many of Staten Island’s cardiologists.
We offer comprehensive diagnostic cardiac investigations for coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, heart failure and other cardiac conditions. In addition, we perform coronary interventional services in the form of coronary angioplasty/stent placement for patients with acute heart attack, unstable angina pectoris as well as medically-refractory but stable coronary artery disease where indicated. We also are an “Impella Center” with the ability to place a temporary mechanical pump device within the heart to support its function.
Our laboratory is staffed by highly competent, highly experienced cath lab nurses in addition to our diagnostic and interventional cardiologists, cardiology fellows and technologists. We achieve excellent quality ratings from the New York State Department of Health on our cardiac procedural performance.
Patients are interviewed and examined prior to all invasive cardiac procedures, monitored closely during their procedures and followed closely thereafter until the time of discharge. Our staff provide a great deal of hand-holding and compassionate care throughout.
