Psychiatry
Welcome to the Department of Psychiatry
RUMC offers one of the largest arrays of emergency, inpatient and ambulatory mental health and substance abuse programs in the state of New York. The Department of Psychiatry has an energetic and productive faculty who are devoted to our core missions of teaching, patient care and community service. We have a diverse faculty and a superb group of residents who participate in every aspect of the department. The variety of patients treated, from children in crisis to chronically ill adults, offers an outstanding forum for residency training, and the continuum of care allows residents to follow patients through the various phases of illness.
Training
The psychiatry residency training program at Richmond University Medical Center is a continuously accredited training program since 1970 and has trained many graduates who have gone on to become leaders in both academic and clinical psychiatry in different parts of the country. It is an integral part of the Department and Psychiatry and the GME community at RUMC and contributes immensely to the provision of services by the department to the Staten Island Community. The program is accredited for 24 residents.
The program is very strong in the diversity of patient population and clinical syndromes to which residents are exposed during their training. This is combined with strong didactics and a rapidly expanding research curriculum with a goal to graduating very competent future psychiatrists.
The primary training site for our program is the Richmond University Medical Center where residents rotate on services including Inpatient Adult & Child Psychiatry, General Medical Floors, Ultra-modern Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program, State of the Art Center for Integrative Behavioral Medicine and other community clinics/programs. Additional training site is the South Beach Psychiatric Center where residents rotate on Inpatient Psychiatry Services.
The program’s faculty has diverse background and very dedicated to teaching and training of residents and most have many years of experience as faculty members. One thing unique about us is that about 50% of the faculty are former graduates of the program, a testament to the welcoming environment in the program and the department at large.
Patient Care
Our patient care activities include state-of-the-art programs in acute services, psychopharmacology and diverse psychotherapy programs in child, adult and geriatric populations.
Community Service
Our faculty and residents serve the community through various clinical programs in multiple outpatient settings. The department makes significant contributions to the needs of the medically underserved and chronically mentally ill population.
