Residency Program
Overview
The Richmond University Medical Center (RUMC) Internal Medicine Residency Program is an ACGME-accredited, three-year training program that prepares physicians for careers in primary care or subspecialty fellowship training. Our diverse and collegial program emphasizes high quality patient care, professional development, and clinical competence. Graduates meet all Residency Review Committee requirements and are eligible to sit for the American Board of Internal Medicine certification examination.
Mission and Training Goals:
Our mission is to train competent, compassionate internists capable of independent practice. We emphasize evidence-based medicine, multidisciplinary teamwork, cost-effective care, ethical decision making, and patient-centered communication. Residents gain comprehensive skills spanning bedside evaluation, diagnostic reasoning, therapeutic management, procedural competency, quality improvement, and systems-based practice
Clinical Experience and Patient Population:
RUMC exposes residents to a broad range of common disease conditions encountered in a diverse urban population. The primary training site is Richmond University Medical Center in Staten Island, NY.
Faculty and Educational Team:
Our committed faculty provide hands-on teaching across clinical services and subspecialty divisions. Education is delivered by attending physicians, fellows, and invited external experts, supported by interdisciplinary teams including nurses, pharmacists, physical therapists, nutritionists, social workers, and care coordinators.
Fellowship and Research Opportunities:
Current fellowship offerings include Hematology/Oncology, with affiliations facilitating fellowship opportunities in cardiology and other subspecialties. Protected time for research is provided during residency to support project development, presentation at scientific meetings, and manuscript submission.
