Understanding Obesity
Obesity is a complex, multifactorial disease of body weight regulation which can lead to a range of adverse health conditions. It is considered an epidemic as it has reached alarming levels globally with serious health implications affecting an estimated 890 million people according to the World Health Organization. According to the CDC, worldwide obesity rates have nearly tripled since 1975 with the prevalence of obesity within the US having increased from 30.5% in 1999 to 41.9% as of March 2020. Childhood and adolescent rates of obesity are around 19% according to NIH in 2018.
