Trauma is the leading killer of patients under age 44. Trauma Services involves the detailed assessment and care of injured patients. Richmond University Medical Center is a NY State Level I Adult and Level II Pediatric Trauma Center, which is the highest designation given for Trauma Centers. RUMC’s emergency department is accredited by the American College of Surgeons, which means that RUMC’s services adhere to rigorous standards, ensuring the highest quality of care, including the ability to treat a high volume of patients 24/7/365. RUMC also has board certified subspecialists available in the areas of Emergency Medicine, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Anesthesia and Plastic Surgery to help care for injured patients. RUMC’s Trauma Service also provides cutting edge Intensive Care for injured as well as surgical patients. On this episode, we will be discussing the critical importance of the “golden hour” – the first 60 minutes after a traumatic injury. We will highlight the protocols, rapid assessments, and life-saving decisions made by the trauma team during this crucial period. Episode 35: Understanding Diabetic Limb Salvage

Diabetes is a chronic disease causing high blood glucose (sugar) levels. Episode 33: Quit Smoking: What Big Tobacco Never Wanted You to Know

Tobacco use is still the leading cause of preventable death and disease in the country and leads to 480,000 deaths in the U.S. each year from cigarette smoking alone. While cigarettes cause the most deaths from cancer, respiratory, and vascular disease, they are not the only tobacco product linked to adverse health outcomes. Using smokeless tobacco is also a known cause of cancer, and the rise of new tobacco products like e-cigarettes, heated tobacco products, and products containing synthetic or non-tobacco derived nicotine present emerging health risks. All year long, Nancy Sayegh-Rooney, RN, ONN-CG, CTTS, promotes awareness of the risks of using tobacco products as well as the importance of lung screenings for those at high risk of COPD or lung cancer. Joining host, Meredith Gaskins, on this episode, Nancy discusses RUMC’s tobacco cessation program and how smokers can kick their addiction for good.

NEW! Episode 32: The Unpredictable in Cancer Survivorship and How Music Therapy Calms the Day

Throughout the month of June we celebrate the resilient spirit of cancer survivorship. Music therapy has proven to be a powerful tool for promoting healing and enhancing well-being among cancer survivors. It utilizes the transformative properties of music to address physical, emotional, and psychological needs. Through the intentional use of music, therapy sessions can provide a safe and supporting environment for expression, relaxation and personal growth. Music has the ability to evoke emotions, transport individuals to a different state of mind and promote a sense of comfort and calm. It can serve as a source of solace and a means of connecting with oneself and others. In the context of cancer survivorship, music therapy offers a unique avenue for survivors to process their experiences, express their feelings, and find strength and hope in their journey. Music therapy is newly offered at RUMC through the Palliative Care program for cancer patients and is offered during inpatient visits, with no out of pocket costs to the patient. Episode 29: The Importance of a Colonoscopy

Today we’ll be discussing the importance of a colonoscopy, one of the most widely recognized screening procedures in the U.S., which is used for screening, surveillance, and treatment in the fight against colon cancer, the third most diagnosed cancer in America. The American Cancer Society recommends that people who are at average risk of colorectal cancer begin screening colonoscopies at age 45. Unfortunately, fear of the procedure leads many individuals to get screened years later, delaying the process of spotting cancerous polyps and tissue and reducing the effectiveness of treatment. Through the years, we’ve heard numerous misconceptions regarding the process of having a colonoscopy. At RUMC, the Vascular Interventional Radiology Department performs approximately 2,000 procedures a year. Our board-certified and board-qualified radiologists offer various imaging modalities with advanced subspecialty fellowship training in their areas of expertise. As the recipient of the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for quality and patient safety, we utilize only state-of-the-art equipment. We offer several different types of imaging modalities to diagnose and treat many disease. February is “American Heart Month” and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States, with one person dying every 34 seconds from cardiovascular disease. We’re joined today by Richmond University Medical Center’s Chief of the Cardiovascular Department, Dr. Francesco Rotatori to debunk some of the myths about cardiovascular health.

Episode 22: The Gamblers Treatment Program

The Gamblers Treatment Program, located at 1130 South Ave. in Staten Island, NY has been providing outpatient treatment to New Yorkers struggling with problem gambling since 1982. RUMC has the longest standing outpatient gambling treatment program in New York State. The program offers clients comprehensive therapeutic services to gamblers 16-years of age and older (in-person and via Telehealth) including psychiatric assessment, individual, marital and family therapy, medication management, and crisis intervention. In this episode, Meredith is joined by Ileana Acosta, Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) and a Credentialed Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC), who is the Program Manager of the Adult and Adolescent substance abuse programs at RUMC, and William Bellach, Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), clinician from the Gamblers Treatment Program.
