How to Prepare for a Sleep Study

To ensure the best patient experience, the Sleep Disorders Institute at Richmond University Medical Center (RUMC) has specific instructions to help you prepare for your sleep study. For more information on what to do in advance and on the day of the test, contact your Sleep Disorders Institute physician today.

What to Bring

For overnight sleep tests, you should pack a small bag containing all the items – including prescription medications – that you’ll need during your stay. Since you’ll be monitored periodically by both male and female technicians, it’s advised that you wear appropriate pajamas that makes you feel comfortable throughout the sleep study. Soap, shampoo, towels, a blow dryer, bed linens and pillows will be provided. We ask that you leave your valuables at home.

If you’re having a Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) or Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), you may want to bring a laptop, a tablet, books, magazines and other items to keep you occupied throughout the day. Between testing sessions, you’ll be allowed to roam the Institute’s public area. Free Wi-Fi and a public television area are also available for your use and enjoyment.

Do’s and Don’ts on the Day of Your Study

Prior to arriving at the Sleep Disorders Institute at RUMC, you should clean your skin and hair, so our technical staff can apply and remove recording electrodes with ease. In addition, make sure that your hair is free of oil, gel or conditioner.  On the day of your study, please abide by these rules:

  • Do not use alcohol or nonprescription drugs, including vitamins, supplements and aspirin. Regarding the use of prescription medication, consult with your Sleep Disorders Institute physician beforehand.
  • Do not drink coffee or consume caffeinated food or beverages after 12:00 p.m.
  • Do not eat after 7:00 p.m.

Please make every effort to arrive at your scheduled time. If you expect a delay, contact the Institute right away. A $100 fee will be charged for late cancellations less than 24 hours in advance and missed appointments. In the circumstances that you develop a cold or respiratory infection or are experiencing severe premenstrual symptoms, get in touch with the Institute to see if your study should be rescheduled.

Be advised: while family members, friends and companions can accompany you in the reception area during the night of the test, they’re not permitted in the patient area – unless the patient is a minor or there’s a medical necessity.
