What to Bring for an Overnight Sleep Study

If you have a sleep study scheduled at the RUMC Sleep Disorders Institute, there are several things you will need to bring with you. Most sleep studies last about 10 hours, but the length of time may vary. Be sure to bring enough supplies to last through the duration of your appointment. While at the institute, you will have access to a full bathroom and shower.

Items to Bring

  • Paperwork and forms related to your study. Please completes these prior to your arrival. If you have questions or are unsure of how to answer, our staff will assist you when you arrive.
  • Any prescribed medications you will need for the night and for the morning.
  • A list of all medications you currently take.
  • 2-piece pajamas (nightgowns and nudity are not permitted).
  • Clothes to change into the next day.
  • Any sleep aids you use.
  • CPAP or other breathing machines and masks if you have them.
  • Insurance information, including cards and referrals if required by your insurance.
  • Copy of any prior sleep studies.
  • ID card.

Items NOT to Bring

  • Jewelry, excessive cash, or other valuables.
  • Pets
  • Hairpiece or wigs (technicians will needs to place monitors directly on your scalp for the study.

Visitor Policy

Visitors are not allowed to stay overnight with adult sleep study patients. Please consider this when making travel arrangements to and from the medical center. One parent or guardian is allowed to stay overnight with patients under the age of 18.

  • Socks/slippers
  • Toiletries: toothpaste, toothbrush, floss, makeup remover, shampoo, hairbrush, etc.
  • Reading material
  • Laptop
  • Cell phone
  • iPod/MP3 player
  • Device chargers
  • Snacks
  • Stuffed animals or toys are permitted for children
  • Additional comfort items. Please call 718-818-7667 in advance to ensure your comfort item will not interfere with the study.

Preparing for Your Sleep Study

After you arrive at the Sleep Disorder Center, you will be shown you to your room and given a chance to get settled. Your technician will meet with you shortly after you arrive to answer any questions you may have and to set up the equipment for your study. This will include the placement of small electrodes on your scalp and other parts of your body. You will then have time to relax and wind down before lights out and the study can begin. While you sleep, your sleep patterns and movements will be videotaped and monitored to help determine a diagnosis.
