About the Sleep Disorders Institute
The Sleep Disorders Institute at Richmond University Medical Center (RUMC) is a full-service sleep disorders program. The dedicated staff specializes in the evaluation and treatment of disorders related to sleep and wakefulness in both adults and children.
The main SDI facility is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and was named a “Center of Excellence” by New York Magazine’s issue on the Best Hospitals in New York. SDI’s level of expertise is why most doctors in the Staten Island area continually choose to refer patients here.
Sleep disorders can drastically impact a person’s quality of life – especially in those ages 30 years and older – which is why SDI remains committed to providing thorough testing services and fast, comprehensive reporting.

Testing for Sleep Disorders
The National Sleep Foundation estimates that more than 50 million Americans will suffer from some sort of sleep disorder at some point in their lifetime. Common Sleep Disorders include sleep apnea, insomnia, narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome, circadian rhythm disorders and more. Depending on how severe or mild each case is, sleep disorders can significantly affect a person’s mental, emotional and physical health and their ability to function during the daytime.
A Sleep Study can help confirm or rule out a suspected diagnosis. Most tests consist of attaching sensors to the patient’s body to monitor their sleep patterns, including their brain waves, heart rate and rhythm and body movements.
Types of Sleep Disorder Studies Performed at SDI
SDI performs both overnight and daytime sleep studies, including the following:
- Routine Polysomnography
- Multiple Sleep Latency Test
- Nocturnal Polysomnography with CPAP Titration
- Split-Night Polysomnography
- Maintenance of Wakefulness Test
- Specialized Polysomnographic Procedure
When primary care physicians and other doctors are unable to determine a diagnosis or when prescribed medication or treatment measures aren’t effective, they refer their patients to the Sleep Disorders Institute to discover if a sleep disorder is present, and if so, what the correct course of treatment is.
