STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Whether you suddenly find yourself suffering from a fever when your regular doctor doesn't have office hours, or you need to make an appointment to see a physician for a nagging cold, Richmond University Medical Center's new primary care/walk-in center in West Brighton can accommodate both scenarios.
Unlike a typical urgent care center that doesn't allow patients to make appointments, the new primary care/walk-in center at 1058 Forest Ave., at the intersection of Manor Road, allows you to schedule a visit to see one of three physicians -- Dr. Peter Stathopoulos, Dr. William Tursi and Dr. Subbaraju Polepalli -- or a nurse practitioner.
"This is a special day for Richmond University as we expand our network of services with this primary/walk-in facility. (This is) part of the hospital's plans to grow services outside of the hospital walls," said Daniel J. Messina, Richmond University Medical Center president and CEO, at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new facility on Friday.
Said Kathryn K. Rooney, Richmond University's Board chairwoman: "Along with our other practices across Staten Island this is another step in our reaching out to the community."
The facility, which had a soft opening two weeks ago, is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is closed on Sundays.
Several elected officials touted the new facility at the ribbon-cutting event.
"This has always been a community hospital -- and this facility, located in the heart of the borough, signifies that," said Assemblyman Michael Cusick (D-Mid-Island).
OTHER RECENT HOSPITAL EXPANSIONS
Earlier this month, Richmond University Medical Center announced a merger with Staten Island Mental Health Society (SIMHS), whereby SIMHS' broad range of behavioral health services will be integrated into the hospital's existing medical and behavioral programs.
The two healthcare entities believe this will result in a comprehensive network across Staten Island. The agreement represents a first step toward a full merger expected within several months.
