Childbirth Classes

Whether you're expecting your first child or are adding to your existing family, childbirth classes can offer valuable information about the birthing process as well as tips on navigating the first few weeks after birth. Richmond University Medical Center offers several classes for expectant mothers. Knowledge is power, so being prepared for your baby can free you from stress and allow you to enjoy this beautiful time. The following classes require pre-registration.

Prepared Childbirth–Lamaze Class/Newborn Care Class (First Time Couples)

This program is a two-part class offered twice a month for $150 per couple. Choose between the first two Saturday mornings of the month (10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.) or two weekday evenings of the month (7:30 p.m.–9:30 p.m.). For more information call 718-818-4294.

The Lamaze class is designed for first-time parents and provides an overview of birthing options, as well as a labor and delivery tour. Lamaze focuses on natural childbirth, without the use of medical intervention or pain relief. The classes provide pain management techniques, as well as information on healthy birthing practices such as movements and positions that make birthing easier. This class outlines the whole maternity process, from first twinges to postpartum care, making it ideal for parents who have not yet experienced labor first hand. Specific information to guide birth partners is also given.

The Newborn Class moves beyond labor by providing information about caring for your newborn baby during maternity. We also discuss some of the decisions you will have to make once your baby is born. This includes discussions of circumcision and feeding. Tips on how to breastfeed and bottle feed safely will be given, as well as guidance on determining what breastfeeding options are best for you and your baby. Finally, details about routine procedures in the newborn nursery and general medical advice for babies will also be given.

Breastfeeding Class

Health and nutritional information on breastfeeding are rights for all new mothers, so our breastfeeding classes are free of charge. This class simplifies the choice to breastfeed and can be beneficial for partners or other supporters. We cover basic information on the nutritional and emotional benefits of breastfeeding, as well as specific health tips including diet, medication usage, and alcohol consumption. Class instructors will demonstrate and explain different breastfeeding positions and provide guidance on latching. Common difficulties or barriers to breastfeeding are also discussed. Finally, class instructors will describe pumping, providing practical information on how to pump as well as advice on when to pump and what to expect in the workplace regarding breastfeeding. The class is held on the third Saturday of the month (10:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.) Please note, dates are subject to change. Call to register.

Lactation Services

In addition to our breastfeeding classes, we offer individualized lactation counseling. Our trained lactation specialists can guide you through breastfeeding techniques, troubleshoot any issues you may be encountering, and offer advice on a one-on-one basis. Appointments are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call 718-818-4294.

Sickle Cell Anemia Support Group

Sickle Cell Anemia (SCA) causes many complications during pregnancy, both for mothers and babies. With the high level of medical care that needs to be taken for these high-risk pregnancies, it is also important that expectant mothers feel cared for emotionally. Our support group can provide the assurance that you are not the only woman to have ever gone through this and that there are people who care about your wellbeing as you face the challenges that come from SCA. For more information, call 718-818-2430.

In addition to the classes offered at our main center, we also provide additional wellness programs at the Women's Comprehensive Center on 4434 Amboy Road, Staten Island, NY 10312. These programs include:

Acupuncture Services

The ancient practice of acupuncture is believed to relieve stress and bodily tension as well as provide healing for those who are ill or suffering. During maternity, it may decrease symptoms such as nausea or back pain, setting the tone for a better gestation. Appointments are available on Thursdays. For more information, call 718-984-9637.

Fertility Acupuncture

Certain applications of acupuncture needles are thought to increase a woman's fertility. Visiting our fertility acupuncture center may stimulate conception in those struggling to conceive without intervention. Appointments are available on Thursdays. For more information, call 718-984-9637.

Women's Stress Management

We offer personalized, one-on-one sessions to help new and expectant mothers learn stress-reducing techniques. Pregnancy and motherhood are both physically exhausting as well as emotionally demanding. By managing stress, you can decrease risks for complications like high blood pressure, maintain positive relationships with your partner and family, and spend more energy enjoying this time in your life. Appointments are available on Fridays; call 718-984-9637.
